DIY Wallpaper Application: A Step-by-Step Guide

Putting up some trendy new wallpaper is the perfect way to update your room and incorporate more of your style into your home décor. But who says you need to call a professional to hang up the wallpaper.

Do it yourself by following this simple guide!

Step 1: Prep The Walls

You need smooth and clean walls for wallpaper application. Start by removing any nails, filling in holes and cracks, sanding down the area, and covering up any outlets with tape. If your walls are dusty, wipe them off with soapy water and a sponge.

Step 2: Measure, Measure, Measure!

Next, you need to measure your walls and paper strips. Measure out the width and height of the wall and find the midpoint where you will start the application. Then you need to roll out your wallpaper and mark the places it needs to be cut. Keep a few inches extra for leeway and use a leveler to ensure the level and even cuts.

Step 3: Hang The First Strip

Hang the first strip of paper on the center of the wall and work your way out. A few wallpapers come pre-pasted, while others require an adhesive paste to stick to the walls. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions before you start.

Apply the strip on your wall carefully from the ceiling and rub it down using a brush or a clean cloth. If you don’t get it right on the first go, fret not – try peeling it off and start again.

Step 4: Match Up the Patterns

The second strip is harder to apply than the first one because you have to match the patterns. As we recommended, matching the pattern is much easier if you start from the middle of the wall.

Step 5: Get to The Tricky Spots

The wallpaper will overlap at the corners and then be aligned and trimmed. When hanging the paper, do it so that the edge extends slightly onto the other wall to be smoothed out and trimmed for a neat edge.

Step 5: Trim Access Wallpaper

When you’re hanging all the strips, trim the excess wallpaper at the ceiling, ground, and around doors and window frames. Then go ahead and cut out any wallpaper that is covering the sockets.
